A Brief History of the Hockey Puck

The hockey puck is the central focal point of the sport of ice hockey. While researchers cannot be sure of the actual origin of the word ‘puck’ it is suggested that it is related to the word poke. This would denote the idea of poking the disk through the air and into a goal. This would make sense as the Irish word poc is to poke or punch.

It is believed that the Irish may have brought the word to Montreal as a derivative of the puck in their game of hurling. No matter if this is the actual truth or not knowing that the puck certainly does have its origins of entry into the world is an interesting fact that cannot be denied.

But what exactly is a Puck?

The puck is made of vulcanized rubber. Vulcanized rubber is simply rubber that is treated with a curing ingredient and then heated under pressure to make the rubber more durable and able to handle extremes in temperature better. Charles Goodyear invented the process for tires mid 19th century.
